The Kids’ Cancer Project is pleased to announce the five successful recipients of its latest funding grant round, which will see $1.87 million invested in FY’27 into research to improve outcomes for patients suffering from low survival paediatric cancers.

The Kids’ Cancer Project CEO Owen Finegan congratulated the recipients and said the continued research commitment highlighted the charity’s ongoing determination to fund vital scientific breakthroughs for childhood cancer.

"We are incredibly proud to invest $1.87 million into research that spans discovery, translation and support, helping to accelerate breakthroughs that can change the course of childhood cancer. This funding is only possible because of the generosity of our community, whose support allows brilliant researchers to pursue the ideas and innovations that could save young lives.

After a thorough two-stage process culminating in approval of recommendations from our Research Advisory Committee by The Kids’ Cancer Project’s Board, the charity is pleased to confirm funding for the below five projects:

At The Kids' Cancer Project, we believe every child diagnosed with cancer deserves the opportunity to not only survive but thrive. And for families facing some of the toughest childhood cancer diagnoses, research offers something incredibly powerful: hope.

“These projects that focus on low survival paediatric cancers bring together some of Australia's leading researchers who are pushing the boundaries of what's possible, from uncovering new discoveries in the lab to improving care and quality of life beyond treatment.

"The quality of applications we received through this low-survival funding round was truly outstanding, reflecting the depth of talent, innovation and commitment within Australia’s childhood cancer research community. It was incredibly difficult to fund only five of these projects, many applications demonstrated exceptional scientific merit and highlighted the ongoing need for greater investment in this vital field and the real potential to improve outcomes for children and young people with cancer."

Our funding decisions are underpinned by a rigorous, independent review process led by The Kids’ Cancer Project’s Research Advisory Committee, which brings together leading Australian and international experts across the childhood cancer research continuum. Supported by robust governance and comprehensive conflict of interest protocols, this process ensures every application is assessed fairly, transparently and on scientific excellence. It gives our researchers confidence that the best ideas are being recognised and our donor's confidence that their support is being invested with integrity and impact.”

The Kids’ Cancer Project’s research pillars have been encapsulated throughout the five new projects as the charity continues to implement its mission to provide scientists with the funding they need to make discoveries, translate pioneering research, advance treatments and build support programs that will improve survival rates for all young people with cancer and allow them to thrive after treatment.

The projects sit in complement to the $7.6 million investment in Col Reynolds Fellowships announced in FY’25 to support some of the best and brightest young researchers in Australia to further their careers and deliver a meaningful impact for childhood cancer research.
