As the inaugural winner of the Josh McCarroll PhD excellence award, Jasmine Jin is a young researcher determined to turn scientific discoveries into real improvements for children with cancer. For Jasmine, the next five years are about building the skills and experience needed to make a lasting difference for children with cancer.
Building a career with purpose
Jasmine is currently undertaking her PhD at Children’s Cancer Institute. Her goal is to establish herself as an independent researcher specialising in translational cancer research – bridging the gap between discoveries in the laboratory and better treatments for young patients.
I am particularly keen to stay on the translational side of research, with the possibility of integrating clinical research, so that my work remains closely connected to patient outcomes.
Looking to the future
An important next step for her is gaining international experience in cancer immunology and brain tumour research.
Following my PhD, I plan to pursue fellowship training in an international immunology lab such as the Artegiani & Hendriks group at the Princess Máxima Centre of Paediatric Oncology in the Netherlands, which specialises in brain tumour organoid modelling for drug testing, to keep within the translational research and clinical application field.
Along the way, she also hopes to mentor future researchers and build the leadership skills needed for a long-term career in childhood cancer research.
I want to deepen my expertise in cancer immunology, contribute to collaborative and clinically relevant projects, and continue developing leadership and mentoring skills as I grow as a researcher.
