The Kids’ Cancer Project’s inaugural Research Symposium, held late last month, is being heralded as a triumph, with a number of researchers funded by the charity descending upon Sydney’s Hyatt Regency for twjam-packed days of presentations, panels and networking.

Culminating in a Gala Dinner, the Symposium was a chance for The Kids’ Cancer Project-funded researchers from across the country to come together and share progress updates on their projects, as well as familiarising themselves with other members of the ‘family’.

Members of the charity’s independent Research Advisory Committee also on hand, as well as Board Directors, CEO Owen Finegan and The Kids’ Cancer Project founder, Col Reynolds OAM.

The Kids’ Cancer Project’s Head of Research, Dr Justine Stehn, was thrilled with the outcome of the Symposium.

“Events like the Research Symposium are about more than just research updates," she says.

"They demonstrate our commitment to supporting the childhood cancer research sector, ensuring that researchers feel encouraged, valued, and part of a broader movement that is driving change.

“A key part of the symposium is providing space for emerging leaders to grow.

"By giving younger researchers a platform, we help them develop the skills and confidence they need to take on leadership roles and shape the future of childhood cancer research.”

Owen Finegan, CEO of The Kids’ Cancer Project, says his highlight was seeing the charity’s founding father mix with the innovative researchers he's helped to empower.

“One of the most moving parts of the symposium was seeing the deep respect and gratitude researchers expressed for Col Reynolds,” he says.

“By founding The Kids’ Cancer Project, Col created opportunities that have shaped the careers of so many researchers and driven real progress in childhood cancer. To see how valued he is by the research community was both warm and heartfelt.

“It was a reminder that this is a true partnership. The researchers value the support we provide, and in turn, we value the extraordinary work they do to change the future for children with cancer.”
