As red lanterns begin to appear across Sydney before lions weave through the streets, The Kids’ Cancer Project is preparing to take its place as the City of Sydney’s Official Charity Partner for 2026’s Sydney Lunar Festival!
Sydney’s Lunar New Year celebrations are some of the largest outside Asia, supporting local businesses, artists and communities, with over 22,000 visitors from diverse backgrounds expected in 2026.
In the Year of the Fire Horse, The Kids’ Cancer Project is striding toward survival. Being part of the festivities as a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness with the wider community about the battle faced by children with cancer and the need to fund bold scientific research.
As a Sydney-based charity, The Kids’ Cancer Project is equally honoured and excited by being anointed Official Charity Partner. City of Sydney Council is an agile, passionate and progressive entity, sharing many qualities with Australia's largest independent childhood cancer research charity.
“I think the City of Sydney has a history of delivering global events and supporting scientific innovation,” says The Kids’ Cancer Project’s Chairman, Kazuma Naito.
“For The Kids’ Cancer Project, partnering with City of Sydney will not only attract more attention to the cause of childhood cancer, it will accelerate progress.
“The notion that we have to invest in research today for tomorrow, ties in with the conventions of Lunar New Year and with everything the city of Sydney has achieved in the past.”
Taking full advantage of the opportunity presented by City of Sydney, The Kids’ Cancer Project will be on hand during the festival at two separate events.
The first event is Sydney Lunar Streets on Saturday 14 February, with The Kids’ Cancer Project located on Little Hay Street, inviting attendees to take part in fun activations with a chance to win some incredible prizes.
Additionally, the charity will be on show at Horsing Around! a weekend of family fun and games on Hay Street, from 28 February 1 March.
Naito says the celebrations represent a wonderful occasion to promote the work of The Kids’ Cancer Project and their paediatric research programs.
“Lunar New Year has been celebrated in Australia for over 200 years. Celebrating LNY in Australia is unique because it's celebrated on lands that have been lived on by the oldest ongoing culture in the world.
“I love that confluence of old and new coming together, while being bound by the same values. The focus on renewal and family translates into focusing on helping the future generations.
“For The Kids’ Cancer Project to embrace Lunar New Year in Sydney is wonderful. It represents an opportunity for us to celebrate our work, but through a different lens.
For those new to The Kids’ Cancer Project who’ve been celebrating Lunar New Year for some time, I believe this is a wonderful opportunity for you to come together and invest in the future of children everywhere.
The Kids’ Cancer Project is the official charity partner of the City of Sydney’s Sydney Lunar Festival, with a series of activations
