Community Champion Captain Australia has completed his Big Lap, walking the entirety of mainland Australia in support of children with cancer.

Crossing the line at King George Square in his native Brisbane, 54-year-old ‘Cap’ – also known as Simon Harvey – has walked over 15,000 kilometres, crossing from coast to coast.

A cancer survivor himself, Cap started his Big Lap in July 2023, with a fierce determination to change the story for kids with cancer by funding vital research.

Meeting thousands of people along the way, Cap has been greeted with fresh pairs of boots, hot meals and conversations raising awareness the whole way through. More than 87,000 loyal followers have kept up to date with ‘Cap’s happenings’ throughout his journey, cheering him on from afar.

Cap has raised over $160,000 with donations still coming in for kids with cancerThat sum of money is approximately what it costs to open three clinical trials across all of Australia’s paediatric oncology hospitals, ensuring children in both rural and metropolitan areas can access innovative treatments.

Speaking to The Kids’ Cancer Project moments after wrapping the Lap, Captain Australia was simply delighted.

I just want to thank everyone today at King George Square today and the people watching and the people who’ve supported me throughout the endeavour. There are so many individuals who fed me on the road and gave me words of encouragement.

I’m so grateful, there’s really no words that can describe how I feel.

The Kids’ Cancer Project Founder, Col Reynolds OAM, was on hand to welcome Cap in Brisbane upon his arrival. He says that Cap’s spirit embodies the DNA of The Kids’ Cancer Project.

"I'm really in awe of Simon. There's not many people that would commit themselves to a journey like that. I'm sure he’s learnt a lot about himself in this period, but to me, his compassion for little kids with cancer is one of his greatest attributes.

I think he's brilliant and he realises the difference and awareness he’s raised for children with cancer. On behalf of The Kids’ Cancer Project, thank you, Simon.”
