The Kids' Cancer Project CEO, Owen Finegan, speaks at the 2026 Sydney Lunar Festival launch.

City of Sydney’s Lunar New Year celebrations for 2026 are officially underway following an official media launch event on Thursday 12 February.

As the Official Charity Partner of the Sydney Lunar Festival, The Kids’ Cancer Project CEO Owen Finegan was on hand to speak alongside Sydney Lord Mayor, Clover Moore.

The Kids’ Cancer Project is striding toward survival in the Year of the Fire Horse. Just like the horse, childhood cancer patients are strong and resilient. The charity’s team and scientists are hard-working and sharp thinkers.

Finegan told the crowd the charity is grateful for the opportunity to raise awareness for children with cancer as Official Charity Partner for the celebrations.

“Thank you to the City of Sydney team and the Lord Mayor, Clover Moore for the opportunity to showcase the work that The Kids’ Cancer Project does and the impact we are having on childhood cancer,” he says.

“Lunar New Year, and this year the Year of the Horse, celebrates family and honours loved ones, which is what we do with The Kids’ Cancer Project, honouring those who have had cancer, are currently undergoing treatment, will face treatment, or have passed away.

We’re very proud to be partnered with City of Sydney and to celebrate this wonderful time of year. I hope everyone has a wonderful couple of weeks and enjoys all the festivities on show here in this beautiful city.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore acknowledged both Finegan and The Kids’ Cancer Project in her opening remarks, and made note of the work the charity does in support of childhood cancer research.

“The Sydney Lunar Festival is one of Sydney's most important festivals,” Moore says.

"It brings communities together and highlights our diverse culture, our art and our innovation. All our city produced events are free, so we want you to have a joyous time enjoying the food, the music, the art and the culture of our community.

The Kids’ Cancer Project is the official charity partner of the City of Sydney’s Sydney Lunar Festival, with a series of activations
scheduled for the February festivities.
